Following more than two decades of abandonment, the Kresge Building has once again opened its doors on Woodward Avenue. In 2009, the building was renovated and modernized, attracting small businesses to the prime real estate. Just a year later, the building is now on its way to becoming a retail mecca in downtown Detroit. The building’s interior has been completely remodeled with retail space for more than 100 different small businesses, retail outlets and cafes. “The Shops in the Kresge Building” are officially open and the building is being continually renovated and modernized. Paying homage to the original use of the Kresge Building, the 5 & 10 Bar proudly serves Detroit favorites such as diner-style malts & milkshakes, delicious burgers and seasoned fries rivaled by none. The modern bar serves up enticing cocktails, craft brews and even banana splits to the after-work crowd and to those enjoying a late afternoon walk down the tree-lined avenue. A visit to the 5 & 10 Bar is a true Detroit experience, where one can revel in the glamorous history of the past and see the potential of this great city’s future while enjoying a great meal or sweet treat. The 5 & 10 Bar is the only place like it downtown and its prime location on famous Woodward Avenue makes it a great place to enjoy a delicious meal while admiring the beautiful city surroundings. The famous Kresge Building first opened its doors to the public more than 100 years ago. In 1899, Sebastian Spering Kresge first introduced the concept of selling quality goods for five to 10 cents. This innovative idea opened as the first “5 and dime” store in downtown Detroit and ten years later opened its doors on the famed Woodward Avenue, across from the iconic Hudson Building. Selling everything from candy to parakeets, the 5 and 10 store grew into a nationwide department store by the 1960s and the Kresge Company grew into the K-Mart Corporation in the 1970s. In 1982, the Kresge Department store closed its doors in downtown Detroit to focus on the increasing growth of the K-Mart Corporation.
